There are many things to take into consideration when decorating a home. Not only do you want to create a space your family can use to wind down and kick their feet up in after a long day, but you also want to provide a bit of variety and excitement for visitors. How can you go about offering both features without overcrowding your home, or your schedule?
Building Unique Vibes and Memorable Locations
The good news is there are a handful of rooms within your home to work with. You have your living room, bedrooms, family room and maybe a spare room to play around with. Where is your family going to spend most their time? How about your guests? Focus on those areas first. We recommend putting your main efforts into the living room, as this is a location everyone is bound to be present in most often.
The first rule of both comfort and entertainment is to offer people something to do. This may mean viewing a majestic painting, freshly cut festive bouquets or getting lost in the excitement of that new gaming system setup. You want your guests to feel at home, but also should avoid decorating too much because this can be overwhelming to the senses. Unnecessary items can always be stored for later use.
Creating the Right Mood
Candles are a great way to set the tone. Scents have been proven to be just as powerful as colors when it comes to creating an atmosphere. Certain smells, such as jasmine have been shown to wake us up, while lavender is commonly associated with bedtime and winding down at the end of a busy day. Looking for a bit of light that doesn’t go out? You may want to look into battery operated flameless candles. Don’t hesitate to show off your personality and have fun with your decorating endeavors. Show off your family’s fun side, by putting full-wall collages of your most recent road trips, vacations, birthdays and special events.
Staying Connected and Getting Lost in the Moment
You probably have a friend who never seems to get bored. No matter what the two of you do: watch movies you’ve seen a hundred times, help one another in the kitchen or sit around watching the kids play, it’s bound to be a good time. Even for these types of get-togethers, there are ways to change things up. Create a playlist, maybe of songs that you both grew up with and have it playing in the background. This and having a nice little selection of board and card games can make an everyday visit turn into something much more interesting.
It’s always nice to add new events and experiences into the mix. If your home is feeling a bit on the dull side lately, why not move some furniture around or pictures you have hanging on your walls? These kinds of quick updates can completely change the atmosphere. Decorating a home is a never-ending process – don’t allow yourself to get bored when you have so many options right in front of you.
